Elon Musk Pledges a SpaceX Share to “Every Kid in America”: What We Know and What We Don’t

Posted on October 20, 2026October 20, 2026 By admin No Comments on Elon Musk Pledges a SpaceX Share to “Every Kid in America”: What We Know and What We Don’t

A single post on X has turned into one of the biggest stories of the week. Elon Musk pledged on Monday to give one share of SpaceX to “every kid in America” next year. Here is what he said, what it’s worth, and what no one knows yet.

What he said

“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote on X, just before 4 a.m. ET on Monday.

What it’s worth

At Friday’s closing price of $146.03, that would be a market value of a little over $10.5 billion. The U.S. Census Bureau counts roughly 73 million people under 18, which CNN says would put the giveaway at about $10.7 billion. The total will vary. SpaceX’s share price has swung sharply since its blockbuster initial public offering this summer. The giveaway would amount to about 1.2 percent of Musk’s wealth. ยด

How would it work?

Nobody knows yet. Musk did not give details on how the giveaway would happen. He didn’t say whether “kid” means everyone under 18 or something else, and didn’t explain what “first of many” meant. He also hasn’t said how recipients would be identified, which share class would be given, how the shares would be legally transferred to minors, or how the tax treatment would work.

The “Trump Accounts” angle

One likely route is existing government-linked accounts. The likeliest path is through the Trump-branded investment accounts, known as “Trump accounts,” and Musk hinted at it in another X post. President Trump thanked Musk on Truth Social for giving SpaceX stock to millions of children through Trump Accounts. That route is not confirmed by Musk himself. Musk has not said whether his giveaway would use the same accounts.

It’s not the first pledge

In July, SpaceX’s Gwynne Shotwell said she’d give one share of SpaceX stock to each of 2 million Trump accounts, a gift now worth nearly $300 million.

Why now?

What it doesn’t mean (yet)

There is no sign-up and no official program. A promise on social media isn’t the same as a distribution plan, and details may change.

A warning for parents

This is general advice, not from the reports. When a big giveaway makes headlines, scammers often follow with fake “claim your share” messages. If anyone asks for a fee, your Social Security number, or a login to “claim” a share, it’s a scam. Wait for official instructions.

Bottom line

An announcement worth roughly $10.5 billion, with almost none of the details filled in. Whether and how your child gets a share depends on plans that haven’t been published.
